- Gas cards – Conoco provides 2-3% discount when we purchase online. As a nonprofit we do not pay tax on these purchases.
- Grocery cards – Safeway provides 5% volume discount when we purchase grocery cards online. As a nonprofit we do not pay tax on these purchases.
- Utility companies – Occasionally we are able to obtain a compassionate discount or write-off from local utilities when we call on behalf of a TCH patient family that is behind on their gas, water or electric bill. We do not ask for this but we do accept on behalf of the family when it is offered.
- Funeral – Social workers and administrators are sometimes able to negotiate a discount from funeral home (case by case basis). We also sometimes receive in-kind donations of cemetery plots.
- Lodging – TCH has negotiated discounted rates at various local hotels, so when we provide lodging assistance to families we are doing so at below-retail rates.
Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers Foundation (rmccf.org): Through the Financial Assistance program, the RMCCF strives to improve the quality of life for cancer patients by providing support and care with dignity. Support from RMCCF provides a designated amount of money for daily living expenses such as housing, utilities, food, transportation, and other immediate needs not covered by insurance. People served by the Foundation range in age from 18-90, applicant's household income was less than $14,600. Many people applying to the Foundation having no income.
Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers Blood & Marrow Transplant Patient Assistance Program: It helps with costs not covered by insurance, for example, people coming from distances for transplant and no coverage for local housing. Patients needing an allogeneic transplant need about 2-1/2 months close to the clinic and hospital and Medicare never covers housing most Medicaid does not either. We help pay for necessary dental work to allow transplant to proceed with reduced risk of infection (few people have or can afford dental care in this economy.) For parents with young children, we have even paid for child care when there isn't family to help. We help with paying insurance premiums, food. With several social workers in our program, we are very thorough in our assessment to make sure we have looked for every possible source of support and also reducing bills for patients.
Cancer League of Colorado (cancerleague.org): Cancer League funded research has been successful in leading to groundbreaking discoveries, particularly in the field of genetic research. Our funding played a major role in the following discoveries:
- Establishment of a link between DDT and testicular, prostate and breast cancer.
- Discovery of a protein that controls silencing DNA cell processes, which, if mutate, can lead to cancer.
- Identification of cancer-specific gene expression markers.
- Discovery of a region of cell cycle protein, which is essential for its function in regulating normal cell division.
- Discovery of the gene targets involved in acute leukemia in humans.
